I COME TO CLAIM TO YOUR COUNTRY
In Xiamen, China, on a building in de midst of undeveloped ground, I put up, in 2008, a banner with the text ‘I COME TO CLAIM YOUR COUNRY’. The location symbolizes development and progress whilst they were literally and figuratively building a new China. This new China will probably dominate the 21st century in economical and technical regard. The text from the banner is imperialistic, inappropriate and taken out of context, but it says something about old-fashioned Western views of China. I consider the banner as a postcolonial work, as if the Dutchmen were the first Europeans to inhabit Xiamen.
